Lauren Ho, travel editor of Wallpaper* magazine, chats to Charlie, co-founder of Artist Residence.
Along with her husband, Justin Salisbury, Charlie is the co-founder of Artist Residence, a small collection of eclectic hotels that were initially designed by local artists, but has now evolved into a finely tuned concept that champions local and contemporary works by a wide range of urban, graphic and street artists from Tammy Mackay to the Connor Brothers. Following the original property on Brighton’s seafront, overlooking the iconic West Pier, the pair have since opened hotels in Penzance, London and Oxfordshire with Bristol coming in October this year. Now with a two-year old son called Blake, Charlie says travelling gives her a sense of freedom and opens up her mind.
What has been the most unexpected experience you’ve had on your business travels?
Definitely the pagan festivals that take place in Penzance! Everyone dresses up and parades down the street our hotel is located on- it’s like a film set.
How has travel impacted your life and your business?
I moved around a lot when I was growing up, so my love of travel is probably in my blood. It energises me and, on the flip side, it also makes me appreciate home a lot more.
What are the three things that help you achieve a good work-life balance while on the road?
Having at least one proper sit-down meal a day and taking the time to enjoy it, packing well, and taking a moment to stop and enjoy the scenery. When I’m in Penzance, I love walking along the seafront and breathing in the fresh sea air.

Describe your travel style in three words
Unfussy, organised, prepared.
What travel destination has been the most important to your business and what have you learnt about it?
My husband and I visited New York about four years ago. We stayed in a different hotel each night and tried out a variety of cool restaurants. It really inspired us and helped to figure out our identity for Artist Residence.

What are the most important factors in a good piece of luggage?
I like luggage that is of good quality and design so that my clothes don’t become creased, I can organise my things, and I can find what I am looking for easily.
What is the one surprising thing that is always in your carry-on luggage?
I am not sure it’s surprising, but I always take ear plugs as it’s important to get a good night’s sleep.
What is the ultimate packing tip?
Never pack too little and never pack too much!
What makes a trip a journey?
For me, a trip is something short and functional and a journey is more memorable.
Where are you off to next?
This weekend we have booked a stay at Heckfield Place in Hampshire, which I am super excited about.
