Despite the lure of long haul travel, sometimes it’s hard to beat the appeal of a summer stay where you won’t lose precious hours of holiday adjusting to the time zone. Here’s our round up of five little sun-baked spots worth getting out of bed for.
1. Santorini, Greece
It’s hardly off the beaten track, but sometimes a place gets a reputation for a reason, and we defy anyone to tell us that waking to a morning view over Santorini’s caldera is anything other than ultimate bliss.
2. Matera, Italy
Meander through Matera and its sun-drenched Sassi (cave districts) and you’ll find more culture and camera-fodder than you can shake a stick at. The city is a European capital of culture in 2019. We say - what took so long?
3. Rhodes, Greece
Medieval walls in the old town, beautiful beaches in the new – Rhodes is one of Greece’s many highlights with plenty of boutique accommodation. An island getaway that’s perfectly primed holiday-heaven.
4. Korčula, Croatia
Throwing open the shutters as the sun rises in this peaceful place is the kind of start to the day that’s good for the soul – and makes Korčula one of our favourite Croatian islands. Cycle to a winery, abandon your bike for the beach and stretch out on your sun-lounger.
5. Pueblos Blancas, Spain
A series of towns and villages in Andalucia, these little sunspots are well worth a sangria stop. With white washed walls and terracotta rooftops, your only plans need involve wandering through the backstreets at an appropriately laid-back pace. Want to match your luggage to your location?
